Activities of EAGT

The activities of EAGT are now numerous. We can divide them into scientific activities, and bureaucratic or political activities.

    European Conference of Gestalt Therapy:

The main and most traditional scientific activity is the European Conference of Gestalt Therapy, which happens every three years and is organized every time by a different institute or nation.

The aim of this conference is to present research activities in different countries, discussion about theoretical concepts and workshops of the application of Gestalt Therapy in different fields.

-         The 1998 EAGT Conference was held in Palermo, Italy.

    The European Writers Support Conference:

In these last years, other scientifically activities have been added. The European Writers Support Conference formerly called Conference of Gestalt Therapy Writers, for instance, with the aim of supporting and promoting writing in Europe, where often the multitude of languages are an obstacle to the circulation of developments in theory and practice.  EAGT organizers aim for participants who want support in writing. We hereby think of students, practitioners, researchers and editors of journals but
colleagues who already publish are also welcome! Read more below:

Conference presentation:
It's addressed to European Gestalt Therapy practitioners, researchers, students, non-writers, writers and editors. It's built on the successful Writers Conferences organized by Ed Nevis, Gordon Wheeler and Joe Melnick of the International Study Center. Many Europeans have attended one or more of these, and it has seemed time that we had our own all-European Writers Conference.

Each participant will present a draft, representing an idea, work in progress, to the other participants and receive supportive feedback and suggestions. Events have always been greatly appreciated by those attending, are not meant to be only for the practitioners who already publish and resulted in several publications.

We also believe that these conferences can (and will) support other initiatives and realities in Europe, not least the European Conference (the next one will take place in Greece 2007. It will also directly impact the European Gestalt therapy journals, and hopefully lead to more cross-lingual exchanges generally in the Gestalt therapy community worldwide.

EAGT Writers’ Support Conference

Prague, 2006

For this, the 5th Writers’ Conference in Europe, 11 participants met at the Institute for Gestalt Therapy in Prague, Czech Republic. We came from the USA, Great Britain, Poland, Norway, Ireland and the Czech Republic, and included three journal editors and writers whose work had been the subject of earlier Conferences and since been published.

As was the case in Thesalloniki, the venue for the previous Conference, it became clear how important this EAGT-supported initiative is for local Institutes and writers. The Writers’ Support Conference validates the work of the local Gestalt practitioner community as well as encourages local authors in non-English languages to take the step into the wider Gestalt community through translation and publication. Whatever we may feel or think about it, English is the international language of Gestalt practitioners, so that the more native-speakers of other languages can spread their work BOTH in their own and the wider field the better. We had numerous examples of quality work emerging into this wider field.

Also characteristic of the Prague Writers’ Support Conference was the focus on mini-research projects for dissertations, which led to a lively discussion around quantitative and/or qualitative methods as well as suitable topics for such studies. We were also open to interesting discussions on the meaning of our theoretical constructs from one culture or Institute to another, with new perspectives and insights being shared.
